If there’s nothing else I take away from my first trip to Africa, it’s how quiet elephants are. These towering beasts, whether alone or in a herd, seem to come out of nowhere. Walking on their tip-toes enveloped in soft padding, their steps are nearly silent. The Maasai refer to these gentle giants as “the Unstoppable Ones.” The Swahili name for the elephant is ‘tembo’ (pronounced tame-boah).
